When a neighbor who tried to intervene in a domestic domestic late Sunday was assaulted during his attempt, he grabbed a gun and shot the assailant in the leg, according to Greenville police.

Officers responded at 11:22 p.m. Sunday to a report of shots fired at 2919 Eastridge Court, according to police spokeswoman Kristen Hunter. Upon arrival, they found 30-year-old Tyree Raheem Barksdale with a gunshot wound to the leg.

A preliminary investigation revealed Barksdale was arguing with his ex-girlfriend, a 29-year-old Greenville woman, and the fight carried over into the neighbor’s yard, Hunter said.

Barksdale continued to assault the woman there, and, when a neighbor attempted to intervene, Barksdale also reportedly assaulted him, Hunter said. The neighbor, a 24-year-old man, eventually grabbed a gun and shot Barksdale in the leg.

Barksdale was transported to Vidant Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to Hunter.

The neighbor and Barksdale’s ex-girlfriend each sustained minor injuries.

Hunter said detectives are continuing to confer with the Pitt County District Attorney’s Office about potential charges related to the case.
