SHP Crashes: Drivers' statements conflict in parking lot wreck

Two drivers had conflicting statements about what happened during a minor wreck in a parking lot, and troopers were unable to determine the cause of the incident, according to a weekly review of crashes investigated in Pitt County by the State Highway Patrol.

The wreck occurred at 11:13 a.m. on Sept. 4 in the parking lot of Speedway off Black Jack-Simpson Road and N.C. 33, according to a crash report.

Sylvia Stroud Wade of Hobgood was driving a 2011 Chevrolet SUV in the parking lot at a speed of about 5 mph, the report shows. David Thomas Elks of Grimesland was backing out of a parking space in a 1998 GMC truck.

No injuries were reported. Damages to the SUV were estimated at $750, and the truck had $250 in estimated damages, the report shows.

The report indicates that either Wade sideswiped the rear of the GMC or Elks backed into the SUV. The drivers had conflicted statements, according to the report, and there were no witnesses and no video of the incident.

The trooper was unable to determine the cause of the wreck.

The wreck was among 11 the State Highway Patrol investigated recently in Pitt County, according to reports available between Sept. 4 and Sunday. Wrecks involving deer and other animals are not included.
