A driver who failed to yield at an intersection collided with another vehicle, causing an estimated $13,000 in damages, according to a weekly review of crashes investigated in Pitt County by the State Highway Patrol.

Rafe Lee Rountree of Tarboro, who was driving a 2017 Nissan van eastbound on Old River Road at 8:37 p.m. on Sept. 10, was stopped at a stop sign at the road’s intersection with N.C. 222.

Another driver, Madison Dale Toader of Bethel, was traveling northbound on N.C. 222 in a 2007 Chevrolet car. Toader did not have a stop sign, according to a crash report, and she continued through the intersection.

Rountree failed to yield to Toader, continued east through the intersection and into Toader’s path, according to the report. The two vehicles collided. At impact, Toader was estimated to have been traveling 25 mph, and Rountree was estimated to have been traveling 10 mph. Toader originally was traveling 50 mph in the 55 mph zone, the report shows.

Toader’s vehicle came to rest near the area of impact, and Rountree’s vehicle went left of center. He parked on the shoulder.

The wreck caused an estimated $5,000 worth of damage to Toader’s vehicle and an estimated $8,000 worth of damage to the vehicle driven by Rountree and owned by Rountree Lock & Key of Tarboro.

Both drivers had possible injuries, but the report does not indicate that either were transported to the hospital for treatment.

Rountree was cited with failing to yield right of way.

The wreck was among 15 the State Highway Patrol investigated recently in Pitt County, according to reports available between Sept. 11 and Sunday. Wrecks involving deer and other animals are not included.
