Doug Henry, who owns multiple car dealerships in the region, was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon Sunday evening at Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Henry, who had a handgun in his possession, attempted to go through the security checkpoint at Terminal 2 at RDU with the gun. He did not have a permit to carry a concealed weapon, said Andrew Sawyer, spokesman for RDU International Airport.

Henry, 60, was taken to the Wake County Jail, where he went before a magistrate, Sawyer said.

If he had a valid conceal carry permit for the gun Henry likely would have just received a citation and allowed to fly, just as Scotty McCreery did in July when he had a handgun in his bag, Sawyer said. McCreery had a permit to carry the concealed weapon, and after a delay when he received the citation, he was allowed to fly later that day to his destination.

In McCreery’s case, he said he had gone to a shooting range before going to the airport and forgot to take the gun out of his backpack.

A message left at Doug Henry Chevrolet Buick GMC in Farmville for Henry asking for comment Tuesday was not returned.

Henry is scheduled to appear in court at the Wake County Jail on Nov. 9 to face the charge of carrying a concealed weapon.

When the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) finds a gun at a checkpoint, they call the local police and they follow through with the investigation, said Mike England, national spokesman for the TSA.

“TSA does issue civil penalties of up to $11,000 for attempting to bring a firearm through the checkpoint,” England said in an email.
