A Martin County woman died after her car hit a tree and caught fire Monday morning on U.S. 264 Alternate east of Robersonville, the State Highway Patrol reported.
Linda Creswell, 61, 209 Pecan St., Robersonville, was driving east on the highway about 7 a.m. when the wreck occurred, said Trooper Brian Allen said. Her 2016 Toyota Rad 4 went off the right side of the road and collided with a tree about 2 miles east of Robersonville.
People who lived near the crash scene tried to assist Creswell, who was alive but could not get out of the vehicle, Allen said. A fire started and the car began to burn, and the people who were helping Allen had to retreat. She was killed in the fire.
Allen said the cause of fire is likely related to fuel from the vehicle igniting. He said the cause of the crash remains under investigation. He said it did not appear to be related to speed. The car’s speed was estimated at 60 in a 55 mph zone.
