DWI Report: Man charged after sideswiping van

A Raleigh man was charged with driving while impaired after he first crashed into the back of a van then sideswiped it as his vehicle continued forward, according to a weekly review of Pitt County court records.

Logan Chandler Harris, 25, of 4608 Mineral Springs Lane, Raleigh, was charged after the wreck that occurred about 2:20 a.m. on Dec. 3 near the intersection of Charles Boulevard and Curry Court, according to the Greenville Police Department.

A Winterville man was driving a 2009 Honda south on Charles Boulevard in the outside travel lane when he saw a vehicle approaching his rear bumper at a high rate of speed. The driver said the other vehicle, a 2001 Toyota, did not slow down and crashed into the rear left bumper of his van. The Toyota continued traveling forward on the driver’s side of the van, “completely sideswiping the entire left side of his vehicle,” the officer wrote in the collision report.

Harris told the officer that he was traveling too fast and crashed into the van, the report said. During the investigation, Harris’ story kept changing, the officer reported. Harris appeared unsteady on his feet and as he was getting in and out of his vehicle. The odor on his breath got stronger and stronger as the officer talked to him. He confessed to consuming six beers about 30 minutes prior to driving. 

He had red glassy eyes and his blood alcohol level was 0.19, the report said. Damage to the van was estimated at $4,000, and damage to the Toyota was estimated at $4,000. No one was injured in the wreck. Harris also was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Three other men also were charged with driving while impaired according to court records and law enforcement reports available between Nov. 28 and Dec. 4, 2017. In those cases, court documents indicate:

Roscoe Lee Pender, 69, of 128 Lincoln St., Sharpsburg, was stopped at 9 a.m. on Nov. 27 on N.C. 43 near N.C. 22 by the State Highway Patrol. He refused to take a breath test. He also was charged with speeding for allegedly driving 60 in a 35-mph zone, reckless driving and failure to comply with license restrictions. He had red glassy eyes, a strong odor of alcohol and refused all tests.

Casey Colin Gillespie, 25, of 115 Gumberry Road, Ayden, was in a wreck about 5:24 p.m. on Nov. 30 on N.C. 102 at Wildwood Drive in Ayden. Details about the wreck were not available. His blood alcohol level was 0.11.

Seth Edward Thomas, 21, of 4410 Bostic Drive, Apt. 308, Greenville, was stopped at 11:26 p.m. on Dec. 1 on U.S. 264 near Old Pactolus Road by the highway patrol after the trooper clocked him going 78 mph in a 55-mph zone. He also had a strong odor of alcohol, red glassy eyes, and his blood alcohol level was 0.12.
