A man was injured after he veered off the road to avoid a rear-end crash, struck a ditch, hit another vehicle and overturned on Black Jack-Grimesland Road on Feb. 15, according to a weekly review of crashes investigated in Pitt County by the State Highway Patrol.

Ralph Morrison Bright, of Grimesland, was traveling north on Black Jack-Grimesland Road at 5:06 p.m. on Feb. 15 when he attempted to avoid a rear-end collision. He hit a vehicle that was turning onto Fort Fisher Road driven by Brandee Suzanne McLawhorn, of Greenville.

The report showed that McLawhorn was attempting to turn into a driveway, but was waiting for southbound traffic to clear.

Bright ran off the road to the left towards Fort Fisher road to avoid a collision from behind, but he hit a ditch as well as McLawhorn’s car before his truck flipped on its side.

Both vehicles came to a rest near the point of impact.

Bright was estimated to have been travelling at 15 mph at the time of impact while McLawhorn’s car was not moving. The speed limit for that section of the road is 55 mph.

Bright suffered apparent injuries in the accident and was transported by Grimesland EMS to Vidant Medical Center. McLawhorn did not suffer any injuries, according to the report.

Bright's 1991 flat bed pickup truck incurred an estimated $6,000 in damages. McLawhorn’s 2017 Ford incurred an estimated $4,000 in damages.

Bright was charged with failure to reduce speed, according to the report.

The wreck is among seven the State Highway Patrol investigated recently in Pitt County, according to reports available between Feb. 12 and Monday. Wrecks involving deer and other animals are not included.
