Man arrested in downtown shooting

The Greenville Police Department has arrested a man in a shooting that seriously injured one person near City Hall early Sunday.
Members of the department’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team and the NCSBI Fugitive Task Force located Alexander O’Neal Purvis, 31, on Legion Street on Monday morning.
Purvis, 3313 Landmark St., was charged with shooting and injuring 36-year-old Juwan Jabbar Belcher of Greenville in the area of Fifth and Washington streets at approximately 2 a.m. on Sunday.
According to witness accounts, Belcher was in a vehicle when another vehicle pulled up and shots were fired. Both the suspect vehicle and the vehicle Belcher was believed to be in left the scene.
Belcher was shot in the back, a news release said. He was transported by Greenville Fire-Rescue to Vidant Medical Center with serious injuries but is expected to survive.
The Greenville City Hall complex, Winslow’s Tavern and the Robert Lee Humber House are located at the intersection of Fifth and Washington.
Detectives have reason to believe the incident was a targeted but had not released a motive as of Monday afternoon.
Purvis was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injure and jailed in the Pitt County Detention Center in lieu of a $200,000 bond.
