A Greenville man charged in a shooting near City Hall early Sunday made his first court appearance at the Pitt County Detention Center on Tuesday morning.

Alexander O’Neal Purvis, 31, 3313 Landmark St., is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. Police say Purvis shot Juwan Jabbar Belcher in the back during an incident near Fifth and Washington streets.

Members of the Greenville Police department’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team and the NCSBI Fugitive Task Force located and apprehended Purvis on Legion Street Monday morning.

A judge on Tuesday kept Purvis’ bond at $200,000 and set his next court appearance for May 24. A court appointed attorney is representing Purvis, who also faces traffic and drug charges dating back to 2017.

According to witness accounts, Belcher was in a vehicle at the intersection when another vehicle pulled up and shots were fired. Both the vehicle Purvis was in and the vehicle Belcher was in left the scene.

Officers responding to the scene located Belcher with a gunshot wound, a news release said. He was transported by Greenville Fire-Rescue to Vidant Medical Center.

Detectives have reason to believe the incident was a targeted but had not released a motive. An investigation is continuing.

According to N.C. Department of Corrections records, Purvis was previously convicted for selling schedule II drugs in 2014. He was placed on probation for those offenses.
