Pitt County Sheriff’s Office deputies made two arrests in a string of thefts in the Rouse Road area east of Greenville after an early-morning chase on Thursday.

Deputies made responding about 1:10 a.m. to a call at 1195 Rouse Road, according to a news release issued on Tuesday. Upon arrival, they noticed a slow moving vehicle leaving the area and tried to stop it. The vehicle sped away and traveled a short distance before crashing, the news release said.

Two men identified as Raequan Spencer, 21, and Rakeem McNair, 19, then led deputies on a foot chase and managed to get away. A search of the crashed vehicle resulted in numerous items being recovered, including a firearm, a laptop, fishing gear, IDs and other items. The men were located later and booked into the Pitt County Detention Center on Friday.

Upon further investigation, detectives linked the two to at least 10 motor vehicle break-ins in the area, including the theft of personal items valued at $745 stolen from a vehicle in the 2000 block Mercury Drive, a $300 Ruger pistol stolen from a home on Rouse Road and and thefts from three vehicles on Hemlock Drive.

In all, Spencer and McNair are charged with 11 counts of breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, 11 counts of felony conspiracy, five counts of larceny, one count of larceny of a firearm, one count of possession of a firearm by a felon, one count of resist/delay/obstruct, one count of carrying a concealed gun and one count of possession of marijuana less than 1/2 oz.

The two are both from Wayne County. Bond was set at $100,000 for each man.
