ROCKY MOUNT — A Wilson man charged in a June 30 shooting death man has a history of firearm charges and was on probation for carrying a concealed handgun.

Courtney Ramos, 19, has been charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in the death of 38-year-old Antwon Chisley of Rocky Mount. Chisley was shot in the 100 block of Sullivan Lane near North Church Street. He was found dead at the scene.

Ramos was convicted of weapons charges twice in May, given a suspended sentence and placed on probation, according to court records. He has pending court dates for unrelated charges of injury to personal property, discharging a firearm within city limits and assault with a deadly weapon.

While out of jail on bond for those charges, Ramos was caught again by local law enforcement with a firearm. In the middle of several drug raids in the Gold Rock area last year, deputies with the Nash County Sheriff's Department arrested Ramos leaving his room at the Ashburn Inn. He had a 9mm Ruger pistol and magazine that holds 30 rounds hidden in his pants. Ramos was charged with carrying a concealed weapon.

The firearm's serial number had been filed down. Detectives are still investigating whether the gun matches any outstanding crimes.

In April, Edgecombe County deputies conducting a license check point on Springfield Road in Rocky Mount noticed a gray Nissan Maxima making an U-turn in a possible attempt to avoid the roadblock. Deputies caught up to the Maxima and conducted a traffic stop. Ramos was one of the vehicle's four occupants.

Deputies located AK-47 ammunition inside the vehicle. Deputies also found a 9mm Ruger magazine loaded with 9mm rounds in one of the suspect's pockets.

A police dog was called out and located a 9mm Springfield Armory handgun on the side of the road where the suspects turned around from the check point.

Deputies checked the serial number on the handgun and found the handgun to be stolen from Raleigh. Ramos and his cohorts were charged with possession of a stolen firearm and resisting a police officer.
