Greenville police said a man is dead following a crash on Thursday near North Greene Street and Mumford Road.

The man, who was driving a Hyundai Accent, died shortly before 12:30 p.m., an official said.

According to Greenville Police Lt. Scott Stanton, the man initially ran a red light before striking a railroad signal pole.

Reports indicate the man suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash.

Stanton said a Pitt County Sheriff's Office detective was driving behind the man and witnessed the wreck.

“The sheriff’s deputies behind him saw the driver run a red light and crash into the post,” Stanton said.  “They then pulled the guy out of the car and began performing CPR.”

They were unable to revive the man and he was declared dead at the scene.

Multiple ambulances and police cars blocked off the intersection for several hours as emergency crews worked the scene.

Stanton said crews from Greenville Fire-Rescue transported the driver to the coroner’s office where an autopsy will be performed.

Police have not released the name of the victim. The incident remains under investigation.
