Social media posts and information from the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner indicate that a man killed by police gunfire early Sunday is a 24-year-old Greenville resident.

Authorities investigating the shooting have not release the identity of the man or two other people who were shot about 1:30 a.m. in an alleyway near Fifth and Cotanche Street.

Posts on the Facebook page of Brandon Joyner of Greenville indicate he was the person killed. The medical examiners’ office reported Monday that it has Joyner’s body and that he was the man involved in the incident Sunday.

The police department reported that three officers shot Joyner because Joyner was firing into a crowd of people. Joyner’s autopsy results are still pending and the staff would not release any further details.

Greenville officers along with East Carolina University Police Department officers witnessed a man actively shooting into a crowd of people in the alley, the department reported. Three Greenville officers returned fire, striking the man who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Greenville Police Chief Mark Holtzman said that his officers treated the incident as an active shooter situation.

“The police officers responded to their training, and this was an active shooter situation for us,” Holtzman said. “The incident happened in a matter of seconds.”

During the shootout between Joyner and police, two bystanders also were shot in their lower extremities but it is unclear who shot them, the department reported.

Both were transported to Vidant Medical Center for treatment. One of them is in serious condition and the other suffered minor injuries, Holtzman said.

“This is a very difficult situation for any community to go through, for a police department to go through and is certainly not something you want to see in your downtown,” Holtzman said.

On Sunday evening, Mayor P.J. Conelly issued a statement on the shooting.

"As Mayor of the City of Greenville, I am committed to being transparent and providing as much information to the public as possible,” Connelly said. Early this morning, Greenville police officers were involved in a shooting, during which a man was killed. The incident is currently under investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation, but at this point, we can confirm the man was armed and that he was actively shooting in the direction of a crowd. Two other people were injured.

We understand that community members may have questions about the events that transpired. We also understand no matter what led up to the shooting, the outcome is a tragedy. This is not an easy situation for anyone to endure. My thoughts are with the family of the deceased tonight, as well as the officers who were faced with an extremely difficult situation. I thank you for your patience and trust as the investigation moves forward," Connelly said.

Holtzman has requested the State Bureau of Investigation conduct the primary investigation into the shooting. The Greenville Police Department also will conduct an internal investigation, per protocol in officer-involved shootings.

In accordance with the Greenville Police Department’s policies and procedures, the three officers involved will be placed on administrative leave, the news release said.
