ROCKY MOUNT — A Rocky Mount High School student was arrested on Tuesday for bringing a gun to school.

Devon Porter, 16, was arrested Tuesday morning by Rocky Mount police and charged with possessing a weapon on school grounds, Cpl. Brad Summerlin of the Rocky Mount Police Department confirmed on Wednesday from public records.

Porter was not placed under any bond and was released to the custody of his parents, Summerlin said.

The gun was found while law enforcement officers were searching for other evidence connected to Porter, Summerlin said.

Parents at Rocky Mount High School learned of the incident from a phone message sent on Tuesday by Daniel Colvin, principal of Rocky Mount High School.

“This morning, as part of an investigation to recover a stolen cell phone, a consensual search was conducted in which a Rocky Mount High School student was discovered to be in possession of a firearm,” the message said. “Law enforcement and school administration retrieved the .22 caliber pistol and secured it immediately. The student in possession of this weapon is in custody and will be subsequently charged.

“He will also be provided with a school consequence in alignment with Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools policy and state law. I am truly appreciative of the thorough and responsive nature of law enforcement officers and all other school leadership and other personnel in this matter. The safety of students and staff is always our primary concern and focus.”

Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools did not respond to a request for more information. However, Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools Policy Code 4333 states:

“As required by law, a student who brings or possesses a firearm or destructive device on school property or at a school-sponsored event must be suspended for 365 days, unless the superintendent modifies, in writing, the required 365-day suspension for an individual student on a case-by-case basis.”
