Man charged with DWI leads police on chase, crashes vehicle

A Winterville man was charged with driving while impaired after he led Winterville Police on a vehicle chase before crashing. He also ran from officers  but was apprehended quickly.  

The incident happened on March 1 at 2:54 p.m.  

Jonathan Daniel Vines, 30, of 499  Hillcrest Ave. led police on a chase along N.C. 11, Boyd Street and Chapman Street. During the chase, Vines was recorded as driving 77 mph  in a 60 mph construction zone. He ran a stop sign and a red light before crashing his vehicle. He then ran from officers and there was a struggle before he was finally apprehended. Vines had an odor of alcohol on his breath and had open containers of alcohol in the car. His blood alcohol level was 0.06. His vehicle was seized at the scene.    

Eleven other people also were charged with driving while impaired, according to court records and law enforcement reports available between Feb. 24 and March 3. In other cases, court documents indicate:

■ Kendrick Carnelle Brown,31, of 2328 Sadler Drive, Winterville, was stopped at 12:56 a.m. on March 3 near Reedy Branch Road and Davenport by the State Highway Patrol. He ran off the road and struck a mailbox and crashed into a ditch. He had red, glassy eyes, a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and admitted to drinking. His blood alcohol level was 0.13.

■ Jorge Luis Deleon, 20, of 456 Tar Heel Drive, Greenville, was stopped at 2 a.m.on Feb. 25 near U.S. 264 and Old Pactolus Road by the State Highway Patrol. He was swerving on the road and ran off the road to the left. His blood alcohol level was 0.11.

■ Milton Ray German, 50, of 4585 N.C. 102 East, Ayden, was stopped at 8:49 p.m. on Feb. 25 near N.C. 102 and Second Street by the Ayden Police Department. He was going 70 in a 55 mph zone. He had glassy eyes and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. His blood alcohol level was 0.11.

■ Travis Hannon Haines, 34, of 370 Second Street, Ayden, was stopped at 11:20 a.m. on March 2 near Montague Street and Second Street by the Ayden Police Department. He had red, glassy eyes, an odor of alcohol on his breath and refused a breathalyzer. He also had two pending DWIs.

■ James Michael Hathaway, 39, of 1710 Lewis Road,Fountain, was stopped at 9 p.m. on March 1 near Bojangles and U.S. 258 by the State Highway Patrol. Hathaway had red, glassy eyes and an odor of alcohol on his breath. His blood alcohol level was 0.12.

■ Demetrius Tyreese Hines, 30, of 405 Pam Drive, Greenville, was stopped at 10:25 p.m. on Feb.27 near N.C. 43 and and Sharp Point Road by the State Highway Patrol. He was going 89 in a 55 mph zone. He also had an outstanding warrant. He had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and glassy eyes. He had an open container of alcohol in his vehicle. He had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, red, glassy eyes and was unsteady on his feet. His blood alcohol level was 0.12.

■ James Roland Howard, 33, of 1789 Embarcardro Ave., Greenville, was stopped at 11:27 p.m.on Feb. 28 near Staton House Road by the State Highway Patrol. He was driving a vehicle with fictitious tags and had no insurance. He also was driving while his license was revoked. He had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, was unsteady on his feet and had an open container of alcohol in the car. His blood alcohol level was 0.12.

■ Phillip Lee Lewis Jr., 28, of 11405 U.S. Highway 17,Vanceboro, was stopped at 12:44 a.m. on March 3 near Stanley Road in Ayden by the State Highway Patrol. Lewis had an odor of alcohol on his breath. His blood alcohol level was 0.16.

■ Cynthia Williams Manning, 57, of 1144 Mallard Lane, Williamston, was stopped at 3:34 p.m. on Feb. 28 near N.C. 43. She ran a stop sign and ran off the road before crashing into a ditch and striking brick fence pillars. She admitted to drinking and according to the trooper, appeared lethargic, had a strong odor of alcohol on her breath and had difficulty standing up. She also had an open can of Natural Light in the console. She was charged with DWI, running a stop sign, careless driving, and for having an open container. Her blood alcohol level was 0.17.

■ Donte Lamar Moore, 27, of 914 Allen Road, Apt D, Greenville, was stopped at 12:20 a.m. on Feb. 27 near U.S. 264 and Old Pactolus Road by the State Highway Patrol. He also was charged with going 70 in a 55 mph zone and for having an open container.  He told the trooper he was dropping a buddy off at home. He had glassy eyes. His blood alcohol level was 0.08. 

■ John Edward Sanford Jr.,27, of 5421 Royal Troon Drive, Raleigh, was stopped at 12:46 p .m. on March 3 near  U.S. 264 by the State Highway Patrol. He was going 92 in a 70 mph zone. He had  a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, red, glassy eyes and admitted to drinking.  His blood alcohol level was 0.11.
