A Pitt Community College student was killed in a single car crash Wednesday on N.C. 33 near Grimesland, according to the State Highway Patrol. 

Quanyea Gatling, 18, 1678 W. Fifth St. Washington, N.C., was traveling east on N.C. 33 in a 1990 GMC SUV when she crossed the center line, ran off the road to the left and struck two trees shortly before 12:46 p.m. She died at the scene.   

According to officials, Gatling was going 70 mph but slowed down to 55 mph before crashing. The speed limit is 55.

A Pitt Community College spokeswoman said Gatling was enrolled in the health sciences program and was in her second semester.  

The patrol is still investigating the crash.
