The FBI has joined the investigation of a ransomware virus attack against the city of Greenville, according to a city spokesman.

Brock Letchworth, the city’s communications manager, said staff has been asked not to comment further on the attack.

The city has shut down the majority of its servers for the foreseeable future. There was no word on Thursday about when the system would be up and running again.

The virus was discovered early on Wednesday by a member of the Greenville Police Department.

Employees with the city’s information technology division were contacted and they decided to shut down the system, Letchworth said on Wednesday.
