NEW BERN — A man connected to an eastern North Carolina street gang is going to serve at least seven years in federal prison for his role in a drug conspiracy from 2012 to the summer of 2017.

Markell Wiggins, 33, of Scotland Neck, was sentenced to 86 months Wednesday in New Bern by U.S. District Judge Louise Flanagan. Wiggins also is going to have to serve five years under supervised release once he completes his sentence.

Wiggins was one of the last of seven members and associates of the Sex, Money, Murder Scotland Neck-area United Blood Nation. One of the seven on the list was from Tarboro.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in a press release said Wiggins in February 2018 pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin.

The press release noted Wiggins received enhanced sentencing as a leader in the conspiracy and for obstruction of justice by using someone under age 18 to assist in avoiding detection or apprehension.

The press release said the seven people distributed large quantities of heroin, cocaine, crack cocaine and marijuana in and around the Halifax County area and were supplied heroin from sources in New Jersey.

The other six people who have already been convicted are:

■ Dantee Brown, 37, of Tarboro. Brown is serving a 30-month sentence and must serve three years under supervised release. Brown received enhanced sentencing because he possessed a firearm and used violence during the conspiracy.

■ Kevin Dwayne Carswell, 31, of Scotland Neck. Carswell is serving a 37-month sentence and must serve three years under supervised release.

■ Shanta Venita Hines, 31, of Scotland Neck. Hines was ordered to serve three years on probation.

Bo’Neka Sarell McDaniel, 29, of Scotland Neck. McDaniel is serving a 62-month sentence and must serve four years under supervised release. She was sentenced as a leader based on her position in the conspiracy.

■ Reginald Savage, 49, of Scotland Neck. Savage is serving a 14-month sentence and must serve three years under supervised release.

■ Collin Lee Whitaker Jr., 25, of Greenville. Whitaker is serving a 12-month sentence and must serve three years under supervised release.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office credited many law enforcement agencies in the case.

They included the multi-agency Tar River Regional Drug Task Force, the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office, the Pinetops Police Department, the Tarboro Police Department, the Rocky Mount Police Department and the Nash County Sheriff’s Office.
