The arrest of a suspected thief prompted the Greenville Police Department to ask residents in the Tar River-University Neighborhood to check for possible stolen belongings and to remember to lock their vehicle doors.

Officers were called Tuesday night to the 1400 block of Willow Street in reference to a man pulling on door handles, the department reported in a Facebook post. Officers stopped 40-year-old Demale Jones, 1103 Vandyke St.

Jones was in possession of various IDs and a large amount of change, the department reported. When questioned, he admitted to entering approximately 12 vehicles in the area of the dog park and The District apartments.

Jones was arrested and charged, however, officers have yet to identify all the victims. Detectives are asking anyone who lives in the area to check their vehicle to ensure no belongings are missing.

Jones also was stopped on a bicycle that detectives believe was stolen from the area and police would like to reunite the owner with their bike. The owner must be able to provide a description and/or proof of ownership.

Anyone with information is asked to call 252-329-3404.

As a general reminder, the the department urged all residents to lock the doors to their cars and keep valuables out of plain sight if its not possible to remove them from vehicles for safe keeping.
