A Greenville man is behind bars on charges he tried to run over police officers before leading them on a chase on Saturday night, authorities said.

Greenville Police Department officers attempted to stop 29-year-old Larry Wendell Atkinson of 1410 Barrier Lane about 6 p.m. on Saturday at the intersection of Dickinson Avenue and Allen Road, the department reported.

The traffic stop was for displaying expired tags, according to arrest warrants. Atkinson led officers on a chase, and at some point he attempted to run an officer over, a warrant said.

Once he was stopped, officers located 22 grams of marijuana in his 2003 Lincoln Town Car.

Atkinson is charged with: possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, maintaining a vehicle/dwelling/place for a controlled substance, possession of marijuana paraphernalia, fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle and assault with a deadly weapon on a government official and possession with intent to sell and deliver a Schedule II substance from a personal vehicle.

He was jailed in the Pitt County Detention Center under a $125,000 bond.
