A body discovered in some woods in the Belvoir area could be a man who went missing on July 6, the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office reported.
The body was discovered Monday by a person who have been searching for Michael Ryan Pollard, Sheriff Paula Dance said on Tuesday.
It was discovered in a wooded area off of Holland Road, not far from Pollard’s home, Dance said. She said she could not confirm it was him until an autopsy had been completed.
The medical examiner’s office said it would conduct an autopsy today to confirm the identity of the body and the cause of death.
Pollard, 40, was reported missing by family members who said he suffers from dementia and other cognitive impairments. He went missing near his home between 8:30 a.m. and noon, according to an incident report.
Neighbors, volunteers and sheriff’s office deputies had been searching for him since then, Dance said.
“There is a strong possibility that it is him but that’s as far as I will go with that,” Dance said. “It would be consistent in the area of where the missing person was. It is not being confirmed that it is the person that we are looking for other than that fact. We will have to wait on the results of the autopsy to positively identify this person.”
