Second man arrested in shooting death
Saturday, July 13, 2019
The Greenville Police Department has made a second arrest in a Thursday shooting death that officials said was a targeted attack.
Cameron Randell Whichard, 28, of 3203 Parkway Court, has been charged with felony accessory after the fact in the killing of 52-year-old Leroy Barnes.
Detectives believe Whichard helped James Zevantron Johnson, 31, leave the scene of the crime. Johnson, of 2707 Crocket Drive, has been charged with an open count of murder.
The shooting occurred about 12:30 a.m. in the 1700 block of South Pitt Street, a residential area south of Howell Street near Brown Street, just across from the Pitt Street Mini Mart.
Officers arrived on the scene within two minutes of receiving an alert from the department’s Shotspotter system. They located Barnes lying in the middle of the street and suffering from gunshot wounds, Greenville Police Chief Mark Holtzman said.
Holtzman said Barnes was shot multiple times and that police officers and rescue personnel attempted life-saving measures. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Johnson and Barnes knew each other, and evidence indicates the shooting was not random, Holtzman said.
Johnson and Whichard were jailed in the Pitt County Detention Center. Johnson is under a $2 million bond; Whichard a $200,000 bond.
