A teen who graduated from Ayden-Grifton High School in June died in a single-vehicle crash on Saturday, the State Highway Patrol reported Monday.
Kareem Melvin Wiggins, 18, was a passenger in the crash that took place about 2:22 p.m. on Brown Hodges Road about 1.6 miles outside of Grifton.
The driver of the vehicle, who identity was not released, was traveling at a high rate of speed when the car crossed the center line, over-corrected and ran off the road to the right.
The car then struck a ditch causing it to go airborne. The vehicle landed upside down.
Wiggins was not wearing his seatbelt, was ejected and died in the crash.
Ayden Grifton High School Principal Chena Cayton said Wiggins planned to enroll at Pitt Community College to pursue welding.
No further information was available at the time of publication, and the Highway Patrol did not have a crash report available.
