GRIFTON — The driver of a Nissan passenger car that was involved in a fatal wreck Saturday has been identified.
Shalique Jones, 17, and his co-worker 18-year-old Kareem Melvin Wiggins, both of Grifton, were headed to Wiggins' home after the two finished their shift at Highway 55.
According to the highway patrol, Jones was traveling east on Brown Hodges Road about 1.6 miles outside of Grifton, around 2:20 p.m., when he lost control of his car, crossed the centerline, over corrected and struck a ditch. The car then went airborne and landed upside down.
Wiggins was ejected from the car and received treatment on the scene but later died at Vidant Medical Center from his injuries. Jones was seriously injured in the crash and also was transported to Vidant Medical Center.
Prior to the crash, Jones was traveling at a high rate of speed. Further details were not available the crash is still under investigation.
Wiggins recently graduated from Ayden-Grifton High School in June and was planning to enroll at Pitt Community College to pursue welding.
A pancake fundraiser for Wiggins is being held July 27 at Hwy. 55, 307 Highland Ave., Grifton, from 7-10 a.m. to cover the expense of the funeral, according to Kelly Buck, owner of the restaurant.
"Nobody expects to lose their child, much less the burden and expense of having to bury a child. We’re just trying to help the family cover the funeral cost,” Buck said. “Kareem was outgoing, very happy. He loved to joke. He was a good kid. …
“There’s so much I can say about him. He was really just an awesome kid. Everybody loved him.”
People can also donate by visiting the restaurant.
Rountree Mortuary is handling the funeral services.
It will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, 203 Fourth St., Oak City. The viewing will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Wiggins will be laid to rest in the Pinelawn Cemetery in Bethel
