A Winterville man charged with driving while impaired led police on a chase before causing a crash that left four people seriously injured, according to Pitt County Court records.

The chase took place along N.C. 11 and Fire Tower Road and began about 6 p.m. on July 31.

The driver, Ahmani Ishmael Thomas, 24, of 23056 Vineyard Drive, ended up crashing near South Square Drive. Four people were injured in the crash.

Thomas who was driving a 2013 Mini Cooper was going 55 mph in a 35 mph zone and according to arrest warrants, was observed weaving in and out of traffic which officers said caused a "severe" motor vehicle accident involving four vehicles.

One of the vehicle was a rollover and several people had to be transported to the hospital for their injuries, according to an officer's citation.

After causing the four-vehicle crash and sideswiping one of the vehicles, Thomas ran from officers but was apprehended a short time later.

Thomas was charged with driving while impaired, felony hit-and-run injury, fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, aggressive driving, failure to heed light or siren, hit and run-fail to stop/property damage and resisting a public officer.

A formal crash report was not available. Thomas' blood-alcohol level was not available.
