Q: Have you always been an offensive lineman, and have you ever scored a touchdown at any level?

A: I’ve always played line because I was always the biggest guy out there so they always put me on the line. Definitely no touchdowns, not at all, but actually my JV year (at New Bern High School) I got one carry when we were blowing this team out. Other than that, it’s always been offensive line.

Q: Do you have a favorite sports movie?

A: I love “The Replacements” and “Remember the Titans,” but I think my favorite is “Coach Carter.” It’s just a great movie, and Samuel L. Jackson is great in it.

Q: Has anything surprised you about the performances this season by ECU receiver Zay Jones, who has 84 catches for 840 yards.

A: Oh it’s not surprising at all when you see how hard he works in the weight room, on the field and in the film room. He’s a great player and a great person.

Q: What kind of products do you use and how much time do you put into washing your hair?

A: I use Head & Shoulders. It takes a lot (of time), and the worst part of washing my hair is the drying part. It takes multiple towels, at least two.

Q: What has it been like coming from nearby New Bern and developing into a starter with the Pirates?

A: I love it. Just growing up right down the road and coming here when I was younger and watching the games, it was great. Now a big part of it is my parents being able to come see every game. It being just a 45 minute drive means a lot.

Q: How many positions have you played this season?

A: Right guard, left guard and center. I’m too short to play tackle (because) my arms can’t reach some of those defensive ends out there.

DID YOU KNOW?

Matau was named to the Polynesian Football Player Of The Year watch list in July. The five finalists are scheduled to be announced Nov. 17, and the winner Dec. 7.
