Fresh off a 71-60 road win versus Richmond on Saturday for the East Carolina women’s basketball team’s lone road victory of the season, ECU hosts Southern tonight for the Pirates’ final nonconference home contest.

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

The Pirates (8-3) are looking for a late-December push heading into their American Athletic Conference opener Dec. 31 against Tulane. ECU also is 5-1 in Minges this season.

After 12 straight days without a game, Kristen Gaffney and ECU finished with a 42-22 advantage in points in the paint at Richmond. Four of the Pirates’ five starters had at least five rebounds, led by Gaffney’s double-double of 21 points and 10 boards.

ECU led by as many as 23 points in the victory, which made it 4-1 in its last five outings.

“We can take a lot of positive things away from (the Richmond) game, particularly that we can throw it inside,” coach Heather Macy said Saturday in an East Carolina release. “I thought the way we defended and rebounded was really good and you could tell how much we have worked on that during the break.”

Southern is 2-5 and on a three-game losing streak. This will be the the first meeting between the Pirates and Jaguars since 2005, when East Carolina won 59-55 in Minges.
