An East Carolina athletics official on Friday afternoon confirmed that defensive line coach Deke Adams and the school parted ways this week.
It was rumored Adams, who spent one season on the staff of head coach Scottie Montgomery in Greenville, was headed to the University of North Carolina to join coach Larry Fedora’s staff. A source said it was expected UNC would announce the hire of Adams.
Though hired as much for his recruiting prowess as his coaching ability, Adams, a former South Carolina staffer, had a poor season with the Pirates. Although the ECU defensive front faced depth issues for much of the 2016 season, the Pirates were dead last in the nation in sacks.
Earlier this offseason, ECU defensive backs coach Rick Smith announced his retirement.
