ON THE MOUND

Friday

Evan Kruczynski — East Carolina can relish the fact that Kruczynski’s start today will be his third straight on opening day. The preseason All-American is one of the most proven pitchers in the country thanks to a 16-5 record during his junior and sophomore seasons combined. As a junior, the tall left-hander went at least seven innings in 12 of his 16 starts. Today, he will face another southpaw in Mississippi’s David Parkinson, who posted a 5-3 record with a 2.78 ERA as a sophomore in 2016.

Saturday

Jacob Wolfe — There was chatter at different points in the offseason that a batch of new talent might push Wolfe out of the weekend rotation, but the senior left-hander had a strong preseason and solidified himself as the Pirates’ No. 2 starting pitcher. He is looking to remain in the Saturday role all season after 2016 saw him shift some throughout the rotation. Wolfe was an innings-eater the last two years, pitching 88 2/3 frames as a sophomore and 88 1/3 a year ago. His career ERA in 44 appearances (32 starts) is 3.12.

Sunday

Sam Lanier — Who pitches out of the bullpen during the first two games of the season will be the main factor in who starts Sunday, at least for this weekend. If Lanier, a sophomore who was a top bullpen arm as a rookie but has never made a start, is not used Friday or Saturday then he is likely to get the starting nod. If he is used as a reliever, look for Trey Benton or fellow freshman Jake Agnos to start Sunday. Other candidates are Chris Holba, Tyler Smith and Hunter Hood.
