Minges Coliseum is set for more New Year’s Eve basketball action.
When East Carolina hosts Central Florida today at 4 p.m., it will mark the third time in four years that the Pirates play on the final day of the year. Dating back to a 78-77 loss to Erskine in 1962, ECU is 3-6 all-time on New Year’s Eve.
This Pirate team (6-6 record) is looking to bounce back after it was routed after halftime Thursday night at Tulsa in a 79-53 defeat to begin American Athletic Conference play. Senior guard B.J. Tyson did score 17 points to reach 1,300 for his career and he now ranks third on the league’s all-time scoring list with 1,310 points.
UCF (9-4) started its AAC slate with a 56-51 loss at SMU to stop a five-game win streak.
The Knights, who are led by by 7-foot-6 junior Tacko Fall, are typically aggressive and consistent on the defensive end. They rank third in the American in scoring defense and second in field goal percentage defense.
