Williams a unanimous rookie pick

East Carolina sharpshooting guard Shawn Williams was the only player to be a unanimous selection to the American Athletic Conference basketball all-rookie team Monday.

The 6-foot Little Rock, Ark., native, who was named the league’s rookie of the week four times this season, led all conference freshmen in scoring (12.2 points per game), 3-point percentage (.366) and 3-pointers made per game (2.4).

The AAC rookie of the year award will be announced Wednesday.

“Well, he’s certainly, I think, played himself into that position and I’m excited for him,” ECU interim coach Michael Perry said Monday of Williams’ chance of winning that award.

Williams also ended the regular season as the AAC’s top free throw shooter at 87.0 percent and was 10th in scoring.

He is the fourth Pirate to earn a spot on the American all-rookie team and second to be chosen unanimously. B.J. Tyson was a unanimous choice in 2014-15.
