The East Carolina University Board of Trustees is expected to sign off on a contract buyout for Athletic Director Jeff Compher when it meets Friday in Greenville.

Sources within the athletic department confirmed rumors that have been circulating for weeks, although no senior official with direct knowledge of the negotiations has commented. No sources would allow The Daily Reflector to identify them by name.

Trustees are scheduled to meet at 11 a.m. in the Spilman Building on the main campus. A news release said the meeting is to hear updates and take any related action needed, including but not limited to action on personnel items. The board will meet in closed session.

The embattled AD, who was met with protests from fans during football season as the team scuffled to a second straight 3-9 season behind head coach and Compher hire Scottie Montgomery, was in Orlando, Fla., on Thursday to watch the Pirate basketball team play in the American Athletic Conference tournament. Another ECU official could not confirm when Compher was set to return.

Hired to replace Terry Holland in the spring of 2013, Compher is overseeing a $60 million renovation to Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. He hired baseball coach Cliff Godwin in 2014 and fired football coach Ruffin McNeill following the 2015 season.

The university also is in the process of hiring a basketball coach to replace Jeff Lebo, who resigned Nov. 29, 2017, shortly into his eighth season. Compher spent part of last weekend traveling to focus on that coaching search.
