East Carolina baseball started its weekend series at Charlotte with a victory Friday behind another dominant pitching outing.

Trey Benton gave up one run and pitched into the ninth inning, guiding ECU to a 3-1 win. The No. 19 Pirates (10-3) never trailed, getting a Spencer Brickhouse RBI single and Jake Washer RBI double in the top of the first. It was 3-0 after Washer’s run-scoring double in the third.

Benton (3-1) went 8 1/3 innings, tossing 104 pitches and allowing the lone run by Charlotte (8-5) on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Alec Burleson recorded his second save in as many games by getting the final two outs. He struck one of the batters.

The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday to complete the series. This is ECU’s first true road weekend of the season.

Washer finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk.

Pirate sophomore Bryant Packard did not make the trip because of back issues. Fellow outfielder Dwanya Williams-Sutton started in a return from injury, but was substituted for during the game.
