After a strong 1-0-1 start to the season for the East Carolina women’s soccer team, the Pirates earned a pair of honors Monday as Jayda Hylton-Pelaia was named American Athletic Conference defensive player of the week and Courtney Cash appeared on the conference’s honor roll.
Hylton-Pelaia played 186 minutes in ECU’s two matches last week, including all 110 in a 1-1 draw at Old Dominion. After the Pirates gave up a goal and lost a defender to a red card all within the first 15 minutes, the junior from Brampton, Ontario, helped in holding Old Dominion scoreless the rest of the way with a highlight of sliding to block a shot in the second overtime period.
Hylton-Pelaia played 72 minutes in the 5-1 win over Radford on Sunday and picked up the first point of her collegiate career when she tallied an assist on Cash’s goal.
“Jayda was fantastic on both nights,” first-year Pirate coach Jason Hamilton said. “Having her out there to help the younger players is so valuable. She earned a penalty and assisted on the third goal (Sunday), giving us added offense from the back line.”
Cash finished the week with three points after scoring a goal and adding an assist against Radford. The senior assisted on Grace Doran’s goal against the Highlanders and added a goal of her own, all in the first half.
