East Carolina’s women’s soccer team improved to 4-0 at home this season and left its first-year coach Jason Hamilton in position to not mince words after Sunday’s 3-0 win over Charlotte at Johnson Stadium. 

ECU (5-1-2) went 2-0 this week, shutting out both Campbell and the 49ers (4-3).

“That is by far the best game we’ve played this season,” Hamilton said in a release. “Charlotte is a very athletic team. I’m super proud of our girls. ... We doubled them up in shots and our girls brought a lot of energy.”

Tori Riggs scored the Pirates’ first goal in the 11th minute on a rebound after a Jenna Dages shot and save. Senior forward Courtney Cash netted the final two goals, including a tap-in on a cross from Jayda Hylton-Pelaia less than 30 seconds into the second half for a 3-0 lead.

Melanie Stiles made three saves for her third shutout of the season.

“It was a fantastic weekend to give up no goals,” Hamilton said.

Volleyball

Charlotte took the Pirate Invitational in Minges Coliseum after sweeping ECU and winning the tournament on a set percentage tiebreaker.

The Pirates (7-3) recorded their fifth straight sweep on Friday when they beat Gardner-Webb 25-14, 25-15, 25-19 behind freshman outside hitter Natalie Tyson as the only player in the match to reach double-digit kills with 10 and just one error. Charlotte (7-5) then beat East Carolina 25-21, 25-12, 25-23.

Golf

The East Carolina men’s golf team opened the 2018-19 season with a 10th-place finish at the ninth annual Rod Myers Invitational at the Duke University Golf Club held Saturday and Sunday.

The Pirates shot a combined 34-over-par 898 (292-301-305) on the par-72, 7,154-yard course. Penn State (12 under) took the team title, and Duke and North Carolina tied for second place at 10 under.

Individually for ECU, freshman A.J. Beechler carded a 3-over-par 219 (69-74-76) to finish tied for 25th in his collegiate debut. Blake Taylor finished 6 over, and  Patrick Stephenson 10 over.
