The Daily Reflector

Monday, September 10, 2018

The major development this weekend in college football in North Carolina was East Carolina’s 41-19 rout of the North Carolina Tar Heels in Greenville.

ECU replaces UNC in our “Battle for N.C.” rankings.

1. N.C. State

Record: 2-0.

Why No. 1? The Wolfpack rolled to a 41-7 win against Georgia State for a second straight victory against an overmatched opponent. Things pick up in a major way this week when No. 14 West Virginia visits Raleigh.

2. Duke

Record: 2-0.

Why No. 2? Because starting quarterback Daniel Jones got hurt in a 21-7 win at Northwestern. Duke also opened with a nice victory against Army and would be No. 1, but it is a big blow if Jones is facing a lengthy absence with a clavicle injury.

3. Appalachian State

Record: 1-1.

Why No. 3? Appalachian State showed off its firepower in Week 2, cruising to a 45-9 win at lowly Charlotte. Like N.C. State (West Virginia) and Duke (at Baylor), ASU has a big matchup next in Boone against a consistent and quality program in Southern Miss.

4. Wake Forest

Record: 2-0.

Why No. 4? Wake is quietly 2-0 and set for a daunting five-game stretch that includes playing Notre Dame, Clemson and Florida State. It starts Thursday night in beginning Atlantic Coast Conference action at home against Boston College.

5. East Carolina

Record: 1-1.

Why No. 5? The case could be made for North Carolina A&T here, but A&T shouldn’t have defeated ECU and it wouldn't have happened without a few critical giveaways by the Pirates. ECU then proved it was better, on the scoreboard and in reality, than UNC with a signature and needed 41-19 win.

If Charlie Strong was surprised by his South Florida football team’s close call against East Carolina on Saturday night, he was not letting it show Monday.

In fact, the coach said his 4-0 Bulls were very happy to still have a zero on the other side of their record after gutting out a 20-13…
