NEW ORLEANS, La. — These questions appeared in The Daily Reflector’s Pirate Gameday section previewing East Carolina’s football game at Tulane, which was a 24-18 win for the Green Wave to hand ECU (2-7) its fifth straight defeat.

Here are the answers, and more insight from the game.

1. Which quarterback rushes for more yards? ECU’s Holton Ahlers, with 12 carries for 67 yards. His longest run went 30 yards. Tulane’s Justin McMillan had seven carries for only 12 yards, instead doing his most of his damage through the air. Ahlers leading the Pirates in rushing for the seventh straight game again showed his great talent and that he has plenty of instinct when scrambling, but it also was another sign of the team’s struggles on the offensive line and with ineffective running backs. Starting center Peyton Winstead got hurt during the game, which left the Pirates with a walk-on center (Jason Fournet) and walk-on right guard (Fernando Frye) for most of the second half. Tulane won a lot of the battles up front, finishing with five sacks.

2. What do the Pirates try to attack on defense? A defining part of the game was Tulane passing more than usual and hitting on touchdown passes of 86, 73 and 79 yards. The Pirate cornerbacks were often in one-on-one coverage because ECU clearly choose to load up against the run and did a good job limiting the Green Wave’s shotgun rushing attack. Tulane ran 49 times for 163 rushing yards, which was its fourth-lowest total of the season. Its longest run was 16 yards. But the long passing touchdowns paved the way for Tulane to finish with a 535-450 advantage in yards.

3. Is the crowd a factor at all? It really wasn’t. It was one of the better crowds for a Tulane game this season, on homecoming day too, but the announced attendance was only, 20,860. It was cold and windy, and many of the fans did not stick around until the end of the game. The crowd wasn't a factor, but ECU did fall to 0-3 in road games this year and 1-13 during coach Scottie Montgomery’s three seasons.
