Southern Miss athletics director Jon Gilbert is potentially emerging as a lead candidate in East Carolina’s search for a new AD, although Southern Miss athletics spokesman Jack Duggan said Friday afternoon that he was not aware of Gilbert leaving for another job.

Multiple sources have indicated that Gilbert, who worked under ECU special athletics adviser Dave Hart at Tennessee, is a serious candidate.

Sources also have confirmed that UNC Wilmington AD and former ECU administrator Jimmy Bass has not been contacted by the Pirates and is unlikely to fill the vacancy.

ECU has been without an athletics director since parting ways with Jeff Compher in March.

The school’s 13-person AD search committee is being led by Hart and Chancellor Cecil Staton.

Hart was the Tennessee AD from 2011-17, with Gilbert serving as executive senior associate athletics director. They also worked together at Alabama.

Gilbert accepted the AD position at Southern Miss on Jan. 24, 2017.

The Golden Eagles are a member of Conference USA, a league ECU was in for 13 years until joining the American Athletic Conference in 2014.

Bass, Eastern Michigan’s Scott Wetherbee and Charleston Southern’s Jeff Barber all are former Pirate administrators.

East Carolina’s search committee met officially for the first time on Nov. 2 and Staton said after the meeting that the goal is for the AD search to be completed by the end of the football season. The Pirates’ final home football game is Saturday night versus Connecticut, and their final game is Dec. 1 at N.C. State.
