The East Carolina University Board of Trustees will meet Monday at 9:30 a.m., which adds to the likelihood of Southern Miss athletics director Jon Gilbert being named East Carolina’s next AD and also that Mike Houston is the Pirates’ next football coach.

An ECU release Sunday afternoon said this emergency meeting was called to hear updates regarding personnel matters and take any related action.

Gilbert is a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne in Hickory, where he also played college football. Houston was head coach at Lenior-Rhyne from 2011-13 before going to The Citadel and then JMU. James Madison announced Sunday night that Houston is leaving for another school.

ECU had not released anything official as of Sunday night.

A deal between Gilbert and the Pirates has reportedly been possible for weeks, dating back to when The Daily Reflector reported on Nov. 16 that Gilbert was emerging as a lead candidate for the position that has been vacant since Jeff Compher accepted a buyout in March.

The Daily Reflector also reported Friday that Gilbert and UNC Wilmington’s Jimmy Bass were finalists. Bass then posted on Twitter on Friday night that he was no longer a candidate.

ECU special athletics adviser Dave Hart is leading the Pirates’ search for an athletics director and a new football coach. Gilbert was Tennessee’s executive senior associate athletics director from 2011-17, when Hart was the school’s athletics director. They also worked together at Alabama.

He has been the AD at Southern Miss since Jan. 24, 2017.
