Norfolk, Va.-based TV station WTKR reported Thursday that former East Carolina football defensive coordinator is set to be the new defensive coordinator at Old Dominion.

ODU, which lost to ECU 37-35 this season in nonconference action in Greenville, had not yet made the hire official.

Blackwell, an ECU alum, was the Pirates’ coordinator for one season. Two days after Scottie Montgomery was fired, he served as East Carolina’s head coach for the season-ending 58-3 loss at N.C. State on Dec. 1.

Mike Houston was hired as ECU’s head coach on Dec. 3 and he later brought in Bob Trott with him from James Madison to serve as defensive coordinator. The lone coaching holdover from the previous Pirate staff is cornerbacks coach Brandon Lynch.

East Carolina’s defense ranked 102nd in total defense and 121st in scoring defense, which actually was an improvement from the 2017 season.
