Maryland’s hire of former East Carolina football head coach Scottie Montgomery as its offensive coordinator was made official by the Terrapins on Thursday. He also will serve as quarterbacks coach.
The hire should decrease what money ECU owes Montgomery. He was dismissed by the Pirates on Nov. 29 with a little more than two years remaining on his contract.
Montgomery’s annual base salary at ECU was $400,000. If hired by another employer, East Carolina is responsible only for the difference of the Pirates’ base salary of $400,000 owed annually to Montgomery, compared to the coach’s total compensation earned annually from the new employer.
He finished with a 9-26 record in three seasons leading the Pirates. He was Duke’s offensive coordinator prior to being hired by East Carolina and former Pirate athletics director Jeff Compher on Dec. 13, 2015.
ECU hired Mike Houston from James Madison on Dec. 3 to be its 22nd head coach. Maryland’s head coach is Washington, D.C., native Michael Locksley, who also was hired in December after a stint as Alabama offensive coordinator.
