East Carolina basketball’s Jayden Gardner collected his fifth American Athletic Conference freshman of the week honor Monday after posting his ninth double-double of the season Sunday against Tulsa with 19 points and 16 rebounds in an overtime loss.
He is the first Pirate to win this award five times. B.J. Tyson and Shawn Williams won the award four times each. Gardner joins Memphis’ Dedric Lawson (2015-16) and USF’s Chris Perry (2013-14) as the only players in league history to win it five times.
Lawson was awarded the rookie honor a league-record six times in 2015-16.
