East Carolina’s pitching and defense stifled Maryland’s offense for the second straight day, clinching the series at Maryland for the baseball Pirates.

Tyler Smith and Alec Burleson led No. 14 ECU to a 2-1 victory on Saturday, backing up Friday night’s 9-0 decision. The Game 2 win also ensured the No. 14 Pirates a series win in all five of their weekend sets this season.

Smith (2-0) allowed one run on three hits in the first six innings. Burleson then fired three hitless frames, with three strikeouts and two walks, for his first save of the year.

ECU (14-6) scored both of its runs in the top of the second, connecting on RBI singles by Brady Lloyd and Dusty Baker. Burleson was the only multi-hit player for either team, finishing 2-for-4. Turner Brown was 1-for-2 with a walk.

The Pirates will go for the sweep against Maryland (10-7) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
