UCLA is the new No. 1 team in college baseball, according to rankings both by Baseball America and D1baseball.com, and East Carolina’s best ranking is still No. 14 by Baseball America.
The Pirates will play a three-game series at UCLA (14-4) on April 12-13.
ECU, which went 3-1 last week thanks to its sweep at Maryland, dropped from No. 17 to 20th in the D1baseball Top 25. The Pirates (15-6) have all home games this week, beginning Wednesday versus rival UNC Wilmington and then UCF for a key weekend series.
D1baseball’s top five clubs are the Bruins followed by Mississippi State, Stanford, Louisville and Georgia. N.C. State is sixth and North Carolina No. 16.
Also on Monday, Pirate surging sophomore Jake Kuchmaner was named the American Athletic Conference pitcher of the week and one of Collegiate Baseball’s national players of the week after pitching a perfect game at Maryland on Sunday. He retired all 27 Terrapins to complete ECU’s sweep.
