East Carolina baseball reached a 10-game win streak earlier this week and it had that streak stopped Friday night with a 2-0 loss at Houston.
The Cougars scored in the first inning and led the rest of the way to hand ECU (22-7, 6-1) its first American Athletic Conference loss of the season. Houston (17-13, 3-4) still has a losing league record, but it improved to 12-6 overall at home.
The teams will finish their weekend series with a doubleheader Saturday.
UH went up 2-0 on Jared Triolo’s solo home run in the third inning and the hosts loaded the bases with two outs in the third before Jake Agnos struck out the next batter to keep it a two-run deficit.
Agnos fanned eight Cougars in 5.2 innings, yielding two runs (one earned) on six hits with three walks. Coogs starter Lael Lockhart Jr. limited ECU to four hits in 7.2 scoreless innings.
The Pirates’ first hit was a two-out single by Brady Lloyd in the top of the fifth. Lloyd finished 2-for-4 and Bryant Packard 2-for-3. Triolo was 3-for-4 and he scored both runs.
