Michael Toglia powered No. 1 UCLA baseball over East Carolina for a second straight night, this time on Saturday in Los Angeles for the Bruins to win their series against visiting ECU. The Bruins then used 13 strikeouts and seven scoreless innings by Ryan Garcia in the finale for a 3-0 win and a sweep.

The No. 8 Pirates dropped their first weekend series of the season when Toglia hit a three-run, game-ending home run in the bottom of the ninth inning for an 8-5 victory in Game 2 of the weekend. The homer was lifted to left field with one out on a first-pitch offering from Alec Burleson, who took the pitcher’s mound for the Pirates to begin the bottom of the ninth.

Much like on Friday night when ECU led 5-2 in the sixth inning, the Pirates (25-10) were up 4-2 in the fourth in the second game of the weekend.

Garrett Mitchell, who is the UCLA (27-6) leadoff hitter in its batting order, gave his team a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run home run off Gavin Williams. ECU’s Turner Brown created the first and only tie of the game, 5-5, during the next inning with a double to score Spencer Brickhouse.

Toglia had five two-out RBIs and the winning hit on Friday.

ECU led 4-3 after the fourth inning thanks to three runs in the top of the third. Trailing 2-0, Burleson hit an RBI double and Brown gave the Pirates the lead with a two-run single for a 3-2 edge.

Brady Lloyd scored on a wild pitch in the Pirate fourth to make it 4-2. UCLA also scored a run in the fourth.

ECU starter Tyler Smith gave up three runs in 3.1 innings. Zach Barnes pitched between Williams and Burleson and was ECU’s most effective reliever with two scoreless innings.

Toglia’s lone hit was his homer. Brown finished 2-for-4.

Chase Strump hit a solo home run for UCLA in the finale.
