Eight Pirates qualify for regionals

East Carolina is set to send eight athletes to the track and field NCAA East preliminary meet, scheduled for May 23-25 in Jacksonville, Fla.
Senior Grace Sullivan, the school-record holder in the steeplechase, enters the regional with a No. 12 ranking. She ran her season-best time of 10 minutes, 12.62 seconds at the ECU Bill Carson Invitational before finishing second at the American Athletic Conference outdoor championships.
Sophomore Sommer Knight is 19th in the region in the pole vault with a season-best effort of 4.15 meters. She finished one spot out of advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Championships last season, placing 13th in the regional.
The top 12 finishers in each preliminary event from each region advance to the NCAA championships on June 5-8 in Austin, Texas.
The Pirates’ other regional qualifiers are: Hakeem Horton (long jump), Evan McCracken (shot put), Kourtney Edwards-Campbell (discus), Alyssa Sandy (100-meter hurdles), Brooke Stith (triple jump) and Mackenzie Whitaker (long jump).
