Wednesday, June 19, 2019
Each of the four American Athletic Conference basketball teams that participated in the 2019 NCAA tournament will visit Minges Coliseum to play East Carolina during the upcoming season, but talented Memphis is not on ECU’s home schedule.
The American Athletic Conference announced its league pairings on Wednesday, which for ECU includes home-and-away games against UCF, Cincinnati, South Florida, SMU, Temple, Tulane and Tulsa. The Pirates’ home-only opponents are Connecticut and Houston, and ECU will travel to Memphis and Wichita State.
The AAC’s NCAA tourney teams from last season were UCF, Cincinnati, Houston and Temple. Houston made the Sweet 16.
Burleson accepts invite
East Carolina standout Alec Burleson, who has been playing this summer in the Cape Cod League, accepted an invitation from USA Baseball to the Collegiate National Team’s training camp.
Burleson, a versatile pitcher/outfielder/first baseman, is the fourth Pirate to receive the invitation.
Jake Agnos, Bryant Packard and ECU head coach Cliff Godwin were all part of the USA team last year. Godwin served as third base and hitting coach for the squad that finished with a 12-3 record that included series wins over Chinese Taipei, Japan and Cuba.
Burleson was a finalist for the John Olerud national player of the year award along with earning inclusion to five All-America teams as a sophomore utility player.
The Collegiate National Team will participate in four intrasquad exhibition games and a game against Coastal Plain League Select before announcing a 26-man roster prior to the eighth annual USA vs. Cuba international friendship series scheduled for July 2-6 in Cary, Charlotte, Durham and Hickory.
