An East Carolina official team spokesman confirmed Friday afternoon that ECU basketball guard Shawn Williams, the American Athletic Conference rookie of the year for 2017-18, entered the NCAA transfer portal.

The Pirates have Jayden Gardner and Seth LeDay returning from last season’s team, plus 11 recruits coach Joe Dooley and his staff signed for this year. The recruiting class features 7-footer Charles Coleman from Dexter High School (Mass.), but also five junior college possible guards in Tremont Robinson, Tyrie Jackson, Miles James, J.J. Miles and Bitumba Baruti.

Robinson and Jackson were recruited as natural point guards. Miles, from Cape Fear Community College, and Baruti are both 6-foot-7.

Williams redshirted during his initial year at ECU, in accordance with an NCAA ruling, and then in his first active season he set new Pirate freshman records in 3-pointers made (72), attempted (196) and in free throw percentage (.878). He was suspended for the start of last season and finished 70-for-195 on 3-pointers.

Gardner led ECU in scoring (16.3 points per game) and rebounding (8.5) last year as a standout freshman. LeDay tore his ACL late in the season.
