UCLA transfer receiver Audie Omotosho was in shoulders pads Thursday as he continues to work toward being in full fear and available to compete in Saturday's scrimmage.

Omotosho officially joined the Pirates on Wednesday after not catching a pass for the Bruins from 2016-18. Houston gave insight on the newcomer Wednesday, and it was offensive coordinator Donnie Kirkpatrick's turn to chime in after Thursday's practice.

"He hasn't been able to do much yet, but what an amazing young man, and he was able to get all the way from one coast over to us on the other coast," Kirkpatrick said. "He got here and didn't know anybody, but has gotten out here and started working himself in. ... What little he has done, I am grinning pretty big. That's about all I can say about that."

Who will be throwing to Omotosho and other Pirate receivers remains a camp storyline.

Kirkpatrick hinted about separation at quarterback this week, but that doesn't guarantee that ECU is ready to officially and publicly name a starter for the Aug. 31 opener at N.C. State.

Holton Ahlers has seen his expected share of first-team reps, although Reid Herring also has been rotating and getting prepared to play. Ahlers was the starter as a freshman during the final half of 2018 when he was healthy.

"It really has been a good competition and we've tried to make it as even as we can, because you always are one snap away from the other guy having to play anyhow," Kirkpatrick said. "That is what camp is for, and when we get into the season is when you have to hone it down a little bit. ... We are going to stay with our plan, because that is what we do, and we'll go through Saturday and we'll go through the scrimmage and after that I think we'll have a pretty good idea.

"Now, what coach (Houston) wants to do with that, I don't know. As much as we love your job and we appreciate it, there is something about not wanting to give the other team your game plan.”
